You neglected to mention that over width tires work good on race cars, but are a problem with snow where traction is a function of pounds per square inch or rubber. Where I grew up, Counties and Townships pulled the outer dual wheels when plowing snow to get better traction.

Wow this is just what we needed. Moving to a 1 mile private road after living on a county maintained road for years was a hard decision. But, we loved the private location. Solar power and snow are the two biggest concerns that we have to plan for this summer. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and experience.

Thanks for this article! I've worked for a company that did parking lot maintenance using pickups (Dodge 2500) with straight blades. What you say about the berms closing in after multiple snows is very true.
I have noticed other companies using some of the other equipment you've described, so getting to know a bit more helps. I run my own landscape business now, and am looking into equipment prices, needed maintenance, etc to decide if/ when I might add snow removal services...
And, yes, instructional DVDs are a good idea.

Good info for all of us in the Northeast! Travelling all over this winter so we managed to miss the winter this year and its been a nice break for me with NO snowblowing to do this winter at all!

Let me suggest a snowblower manufactured by FAIR Yankton South Dakota or a WILDCAT Tea South Dakota both are manufactured with twin blowers and no augers. I have a 61 in Fair with a 3 cylinder Italian diesel on it that fits on the front of my skid loader it's nearly indestructible. It's for sale but they won't let me list it here

Hello Nick,
We live in WV and our road is 1/4 mile up to the top and is fairly steep in one area. When we first moved here I tried removing snow with our tractor but because of the steepness
of the road, it seemed to continually get stuck and realized it wasn't the best idea, besides the danger of destroying the tractor. A local Still chainsaw shop owner recommend to me that I to try using a quality leaf blower. He said many people around here use this method to blow the snow off the tracks of the road, especially when its a light snow up to about 4" to 6". Anyway we have used this method for the last 7 yrs and it works. It takes me about one and a half hours to go down and come back up, and I get some exercise in the process.
Just thought id share that idea for people with shorter, steeper driveways.
